MARRAKECH EXCURSIONS: ESCAPE AWAY FROM THE CROWD IN PRIVATE

 THE RED CITY

      The Agdal Gardens

After passing through the wall at Bab Irhil, walk alongside the Almohad kasbah and the Royal Palace on your left. On the right, the Agdal Gardens, irrigated by a 2-hectare central basin, invite you for a pleasant stroll among the lemon, orange, and olive trees that populate this 450-hectare haven of coolness, eight centuries old. A little further on to the left lies the esplanade of the Grand Mechouar, where the sultan received embassies. Continue your visit along the wall, which you will pass through again at Bab Ahmer, built by the Alaouite dynasty, then turn left towards Bab Ailen.

     The Koutoubia

The Mosque of the Booksellers, a jewel of Almohad art, dates from the 12th century. According to Leo Africanus, a hundred manuscript shops were located at its base. Its minaret (77 meters), one of the largest in the Muslim West, is decorated with faience tiles and topped with four golden spheres. It served as a model for the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville.

    Jamaâ el Fna

The Place of the Tortured, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the beating heart of the Medina. This vast esplanade near the Koutoubia Mosque serves as both an agora and a souk. Throughout the day and late into the night, a vibrant world of age-old traditions invites you to dream and escape. In this immense open-air theater, fortune tellers, snake charmers, storytellers, and showmen transform the square into a magical place.

    The Saadian Tombs

Next to the mosque, one can visit this richly decorated royal necropolis, where Sultan Ahmed el Mansour and Abu Dhabi, the victorious "the Golden One," who defeated Portugal at the Battle of the Three Kings in 1578 and conquered Sudan, entered. The halls and courtyard of the mausoleum house the tombs of the founder and descendants of the Sadean dynasty. Three interconnected rooms—the mihrab hall, the hall of the twelve columns, and the hall of the three niches—are distinguished by the exquisite detail of their decoration: Carrara marble columns, ceilings adorned with sculpted stucco panels, and domes with stalactites made of cedar wood, carved and embellished with gold.
